Diarrhea In Dogs: When To Call Your Urgent Care Vet Or Emergency Vet.

Most pet owners can say that their dog has experienced diarrhea at some point in their life, making it important for owners to know why dogs have diarrhea and what they can do about it.

Diarrhea is one of the most common symptoms in dogs, and it is characterized by the passing of watery or very soft stool. Sometimes diarrhea can be accompanied with vomiting, loss of appetite, or lethargy.

Why Do Dogs Get Diarrhea?

A variety of things can cause diarrhea in dogs. For example, getting into the trash, eating something they shouldn’t, or it could be a result of something much more serious.

So when do you call your local urgent care vet or emergency vet? If your dog experiences one bowel movement that could be considered loose, there is probably no need to worry. However, if it persists throughout the day or over the next couple of weeks, call your local urgent care vet or emergency vet and have your pup seen.

When to Call Your Vet Immediately

If you notice any of the following things, contact your local urgent care vet or emergency vet immediately:

  • Your dog may have ingested a toxin or forgein body.

  • Your dog is experiencing multiple episodes of diarrhea.

  • You notice excessive amounts of blood in their stool.

  • Their stool is black and/or tarry in appearance.

  • Your dog's gums are pale, white, bluish, or gray in color.

  • Your dog is lethargic or unresponsive.

  • Your dog's abdomen is painful or distended.

  • You see worms in the stool.

If your dog experiences only one episode of diarrhea and is acting completely normal, you can always keep a close eye on them to see how they are feeling over the next couple of hours. However, if at any point you become concerned, don’t hesitate to give us a call. Like you, we want to make sure that your pup feels their best and is well taken care of!
